Open Book

Since last summer, PEPY has been working in partnership with Open Book, a free library and community space for children, adults and families in Phnom Penh. When we first opened an office in Phnom Penh, there was not space conducive for interviewing potential staff, and Open Book graciously allowed PEPY staff to conduct interviews and mock lessons in their library. Over the years Open Book has had many books donated to their library which are in English and French and they have spent time to translate these books into Khmer. These translations were shared with PEPY and new translations of books donated by Better World Books were also made with a team of Open Book Staff and one of PEPY’s interns, Seakngoy. The 100 books were recently sent up to our Siem Reap office where our wonderful intern team of Thavry and Nary have been working hard to translate the titles and check all previous translations so that they are ready to be put into the library at the PEPY Ride School. We are happy to supply the students with some new reading material to whizz through and enjoy! Thavry’s favorite of the books is called Clifford the Big Red Dog which is about a small red puppy that grew very big. He grew bigger than his house! He grew too big to live in the city, and so was taken to a farm where his owners could still visit him.Thavry says ‘I like this story because it is so strange! It is impossible for a dog to be bigger than a house, but it is fun to imagine it happening!’
