PEPY Recruits Students for Full Scholarships to University in Bangladesh

This will be an incredible opportunity for young Cambodian women to further their education. For many of the selected applicants, it will be their first chance to live in another country and interact with an international peer group. Through the scholarship program, the university endeavors to bring together women from a diverse range of national, cultural, ethnic, linguistic and economic backgrounds, providing them the skills and wisdom necessary to become leaders in their countries and communities.

In Cambodia and throughout the world, young men are often invested in more than young women, and women have the added burden of being more restricted and limited in their opportunities and choices. While women make up over half of the population of Cambodia, they are more disadvantaged than men by nearly all measures, including economic well-being, health, education, and literacy. Many women do not have the resources to attend school, either because of prohibitive costs or because families are unsupportive of their continuing education. In Cambodia fewer girls than boys go on to secondary school and even fewer women continue to University.

With these ideas in mind, activists, scholars and business professionals from across the world came together to form and develop the Asian University for Women, a higher education institution that is committed to training female leaders from countries throughout Asia, with a particular focus on women from marginalized and underserved communities. Recognizing the potential that women have for positive social development, the founders of AUW hope to educate and cultivate women leaders from all backgrounds, empowering them to help themselves, their families, and their communities.

The university partnership is a first for PEPY. We are excited about the opportunity to extend our educational efforts to this level, and believe we can support the selected applicants in their pursuit of a university degree and ultimately, to become leaders in their society.
