“The Cambodia of today is completely different from that of 30 years ago, when the Khmer Rouge reigned terror on the country. Cambodia was already devastated by a five-year civil war when, in 1975, the communist Khmer Rouge under their ruthless leader Pol Pot overtook the country. Citizens were forced to leave their homes and become peasants in the countryside; many others simply disappeared. Today, people are vibrant and possess the resilience to rebuild, yet the struggle is far from over. I stepped off the plane into the poverty of Phnom Penh, and although I was there to work and give assistance, I knew the help I could provide would be but a drop in an ocean of need…” (read the article)
